groups - 2 or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, coming together to achieve particular objectives.
stages of group development are forming - much uncertainty, storming - intragroup conflict, norming - close relationships and cohesiveness, performing - group fully functional and adjourning - more concern on wrapping up activities rather than task performance.
reasons for groups
1) affilation - social interaction
2) security - no more "standing alone"
3) status - provides recognition and makes individuals feel more important
4) power - some things can't be achieved individually, requires group's power
5) self esteem - provides feelings of self-worth
6) goal achievement - pool talents to achieve goal as different people have different abilities
norms - acceptable standards of behaviour in a group that are adopted and shared by group's members.
types of norms
1) performance - level of output, effort to put in
2) appearance - dress code for different occassions
3) social arrangement
4) allocation of resources - pay, resources
cohesiveness - degree to which members in the group are attracted to each other and are motivated to stay in the group
